NSFAS 2027: what to get ready now (before applications open)

NSFAS applications for the 2027 academic year are expected to open around early September 2026 — NSFAS hasn't announced the official date yet, so keep an eye on nsfas.org.za. What we do know, from every previous cycle: the students who get funded on time aren't the ones who apply fastest. They're the ones whose documents are ready before the window opens.

First: what NSFAS actually is

NSFAS is a bursary, not a loan. If you meet the academic requirements to keep it, you don't pay it back. It covers tuition and allowances at public universities and TVET colleges for South African citizens and permanent residents whose combined household income is R350 000 a year or less — or R600 000 if you live with a disability.

One thing that trips people up every year: your NSFAS application and your university/college application are two separate things. NSFAS pays; the institution admits. You need both. Most university application windows for 2027 close around 30 September 2026 — in many cases before NSFAS closes — so don't wait for a funding answer before applying to study.

The document that stops applications cold: the consent form

NSFAS verifies what you tell them against Home Affairs and SARS. To do that, you and your parent, guardian or spouse must sign a consent form — and without it, your application will not go through. This is the single most common avoidable blocker. Download it, get it signed, keep a clear scan.

The full get-ready list

Everyone needs:

  • Signed consent form — you + parent/guardian/spouse (the Home Affairs/SARS check above)
  • Your SA ID — or an unabridged birth certificate if you don't have an ID yet
  • Parent / guardian / spouse IDs — the people whose income gets assessed with yours
  • Proof of household income — recent payslips, a SASSA or UIF letter, or an affidavit if unemployed

Some applicants also need:

  • Declaration form — if you're 34 or younger, to verify parent/guardian details
  • Disability annexure — merged with your medical reports, if you live with a disability
  • Orphan or vulnerable child declaration — if you're under 18 and this applies to you

How to apply (when it opens)

Applications go through your myNSFAS account at my.nsfas.org.za. Create the account now if you don't have one — and once you've applied, keep checking it: NSFAS requests missing documents through the portal, and unanswered requests stall applications for months.

What if you miss the window?

Late applications are sometimes taken during registration week in January/February — but that's a scramble you don't want: funding decisions land after registration deadlines, and you may front money you don't have. Treat the closing date as real.

Where Prospectus fits

The Desk keeps your documents in one vault — upload once, reuse across every application — and tracks your funding deadlines alongside your study applications, so NSFAS week doesn't ambush you. Start free; your season, in one place.
